Basic Animal Control Officer Certification

Course Description

The Basic Animal Control Officer Certification course is a forty (40) hour course designed for those seeking employment in the field of animal control, new animal control officers seeking general training, and officers seeking state-mandated training requirements.  The course is comprised of lectures, hands-on training activities, and student presentations/discussions.

Course Topics

This course utilizes lectures from the core training blocks (CTBs) of the American Animal Cruelty Investigations School’s Training Curriculum.  The required lectures are appropriately weighted in their respective CTBs as required for all ACO certifications.

Training Block A: Animal Control Officer Fundamentals

  • Introduction to animal control as a profession
  • Communication skills and conflict resolution
  • Disaster Planning

Training Block B: Legal Environment

  • U.S. justice system
  • Constitutional law (4th, 5th, 6th, and 14th Amendments)
  • Animals and the law

Training Block C: Animal Knowledge

  • Introduction to animal control as a profession
  • Communication skills and conflict resolution
  • Disaster Planning

Training Block D: Field Operations

  • Animal capture and handling techniques
  • Responding to calls for service
  • Investigations, chemical immobilization, and euthanasia

Training Block E: Investigations

  • Animal cruelty (neglect and intentional)
  • Dangerous dogs
  • Hoarding and dogfighting

Training Block F: Zoonotic Disease

  • Rabies awareness and prevention
  • Internal and external parasites
  • Common zoonotic diseases

Course Prerequisites and Restrictions

There are no prerequisites or restrictions for this course. This course is open to the general public.

Completion Standards

Students must attend all lectures, participate in all hands-on activities and scenario-based training, and pass a written exam with a score of 75% or higher.

Certifications

Students successfully passing this course will receive the following AACIS certifications:

  • Basic Animal Control Officer
  • CPR for Canines and Felines

Training Credits and Limitations

This course qualifies as the first 40-hour block towards the Advanced Animal Control Officer certification.  This course also counts towards the 110-hour AACIS certified Animal Control Officer certification and the 270-hour AACIS Certified Humane Investigator certification.
